So how are your New Year’s resolutions coming along?

That was sarcasm folks. I say: Why wait for the New Year?

When someone say’s “It’s going to be one of my New Year’s resolution.”, it pretty much tells me how serious they are about their goals and whether I’d want to do business with them. Even hang out with them. Really. It’s one of those “Red Flag” kind of things. I don’t think I’ve done a New Year’s resolution since my teens. From Psychology Today, it is estimated that less than 10% of them actually are accomplished. And yet, people do it every year.

I’ve been incredibly driven and competitive for as long as I can remember. I guess it really came out when I started out in sports when I was 14. For me, it was always training, schedules and goals. I know at one point I remember saying to myself “Why should I wait for the New Year to start ‘xyz’? Why not start now? I’ll be so much more ahead by the New Year….”

And that’s why it’s such a big issue for me. Resolutions are supposed to be for reaching goals and improving some area of your life. And if you’re not serious about making it happen now, it’s just a farce. Why waste your time and everyone else’s? The person will just talk talk talk and build it up to everyone who will listen. The day comes and they jump in. No preparation. They go 110% for a month. Maybe 6 weeks. Then they take some time off saying they need a break. Then they’ll dabble again for a few days. And the time between dabbling becomes longer and longer until they give up. The 90% in action. Then they’ll do the same thing all over next New Years.

Does this remind you of anything? Maybe the story “The tortoise and the hare”? I can always tell you which people will succeed in life by how they tackle long term projects. One of the biggest indicators. Are they spending 110% of their energy for short periods of time or are they grinding it out every day? I’ll tell you, one of them is sitting around with a drink in their hand, blaming everything and everyone for why they aren’t succeeding and the other: working.
