For better or worse, this week was about the hair stylist! I had a last minute emergency before a big shoot and it all centered around them. Which in turn, inspired me to write a blog article about them!

From my experiences, the hair stylist typically gets the short end in fashion photography where you will have many looks. I'm not sure why exactly. I personally think it's the disorganization of the shoot that doesn't allow for a hair stylist to be more fully utilized and let them be more creative. Because when you do, amazing things can happen!

Oxana Bornsen - Gustavson

Maybe the hair stylist that most perfectly fit my style of work. So whenever we worked together, which was quite a bit in the beginning of my career in San Francisco, the work she did was beautiful, exquisite and spellbinding. And even more amazingly, she was equally good with makeup! Really, it's extremely rare for someone like that!

The images pictured below are my first 'fashion shoot' and the first time I worked with her. I mean, for my first photo shoot, I couldn't be happier with the results. Especially with all the things that I did wrong! My biggest mistake was not putting enough light on model Fallon's hair. I was so blown away by the makeup work that I focused on her face. And quite frankly, my eye was nowhere near as developed to look at details. Now, it's just instinct. But I still love the images. They put me on the map.

Lauren Warner

Lauren Warner....  An industry veteran in makeup and hair and it shows! I still think about how blessed I was to have been able to work with her! And another master of both hair and makeup!

I think of Lauren Warner as the flip-side of Oxana of style. She does serious fashion. But where Oxana would be perfectly at home in Harper's Bazaar with their soft and feminine look for fashion, Lauren would be in W Magazine with their racier and sexier vibe.

While I worked with Lauren on various, it was largely a team between me, Lauren and model Chalyce. One time, Lauren did a particular hairstyle for one part of a shoot. Then for the second part, which wasn't originally planned, Chalyce and I un-did Lauren's hairstyling work and these gorgeous and amazing curls appeared! The first images we showed to people everyone just thought they were so perfect for Chalyce! Totally agreed!

The first image is the first time I released it publicly titled "Rocker Girl". She was portraying a rock musician partying in a hotel room. Absolutely fantastic shot!

The second image was more of a creative shoot and all about glamour. And those curls.

Carissa Swan

Carissa was my first New York hair stylist and makeup artist and she worked with me on my first, New York photo shoot. While a big shoot with several different looks, this one with Olga and that gorgeous hair and hair style remains one of my more iconic and perfect shots. Slick. Clean lines. Artistic. Perfect.

Tashi!

Tashi is a model. Not a hair stylist or makeup artist. With the two shoots I've worked with her on, she's done her own hair and makeup.

But the thing with Tashi is, her hair should get its own credit on a shoot! Not only does Tashi have some of the most beautiful hair I've ever seen, it seems to have a personality of its own. Tashi knows how to work her hair. But when the wind blows, her hair acts on its own and makes these absolutely surreal and beautiful shots!

So there you have it. Some of my favorites from the beginning to as recent as January 2021! When doing a shoot, don't make the hair stylist second fiddle!
